In short: Sir Ian Hamilton’s career was defined by a strange paradox of timing. Twice recommended for the Victoria Cross, he was rejected both times: once for being too junior and once for being too senior. This irony underscores a life spent at the center of the British Empire's most pivotal conflicts.

Born in Corfu in 1853, Hamilton entered the British Army during a transformative era for the military. During 1869, he joined the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, marking the initial period when academic testing replaced financial payments for officer roles. His early career was marked by intense combat in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80) and the Nile Expedition (1884–85). During the First Boer War, he was wounded at the Battle of Majuba and taken prisoner, an event that earned him a reputation as a war hero and an introduction to Queen Victoria. Hamilton’s military trajectory was shaped by high-stakes leadership and personal connections. He served as an aide-de-camp to Field-Marshal Lord Roberts for nearly a decade, beginning with a heroic rescue of British soldiers from Afghan raiders in 1879.

His career spanned the globe, from the Tirah Campaign in India, where he was wounded again in 1897–98, to the Russo-Japanese War, where he served as a representative of the Indian army attached to Japanese Imperial forces. His final active command in 1915 saw him lead the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign. The mission aimed to neutralize the Ottoman Empire by forcing a passage through the Dardanelles, but the campaign stalled, leading to his recall. After retiring in 1920, Hamilton transitioned from a man of war to a man of letters. He became a prolific author and a prominent figure in ex-servicemen organizations, maintaining a wide circle of literary friends and a personal library that blended military history with philosophy and opera.
