In short: Long before it was a modern industrial hub, Jalna was a vital military outpost. From the Ahmadnagar Sultanate to the Mughal Empire, the city's infrastructure was shaped by the shifting tides of early modern warfare and the need for defensive strength.

The history of Jalna, located in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, is deeply intertwined with the expansionist ambitions of the Mughal Empire and the local Sultanates. Before the Mughal conquests, the area was under the control of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. During this era, around 1557, the governor Jamshid Khan significantly developed the town's infrastructure, constructing a reservoir, a travellers' sara’i, and the Kali Masjid mosque. The town, which was once known as Jalnapur, sits at an average elevation of 508 metres on the banks of the Kundal<0xC2>ika River.

The city's strategic importance escalated as it was eventually captured by the Mughals during the reign of Akbar. As power shifted through the subsequent reigns of Aurangzeb and the Nizam-ul-Mulk, Asaf Jah I, the city underwent various civic and military upgrades. These developments were not merely for comfort but were essential for maintaining control over a contested landscape. The city's administrative history is equally complex, as it functioned as a tehsil within the Aurangabad district under the Hyderabad State. This arrangement lasted until the formation of the Jalna district on 1 May 1981.

A pivotal moment in the city's defensive history occurred in 1725 with the construction of the Jalna Fort, also known as Mastgad. This fortification was specifically built as a response to Maratha incursions, serving as a physical manifestation of the era's military tensions. This period of fortification highlights how the city's architecture was directly dictated by the necessity of survival during the early modern wars of the Indian subcontinent. Today, the city's diverse population includes adherents of Buddhism, Jainism, and Christianity, alongside significant Hindu and Muslim communities.
