From a $259 million school to a $10.5 million exit
In short: Jerry Falwell Jr. turned Liberty University into a multi-billion dollar powerhouse, but his presidency collapsed amidst allegations of nepotism and personal scandals. His tenure ended in 2020, sparking a massive legal battle over fiduciary duties, real estate deals, and a multimillion-dollar settlement following his high-profile resignation.
Following the death of his father in 2007, Jerry Falwell Jr. took over Liberty University based on a succession plan that prioritized his 'aggressive business instincts.' Under his leadership, the university's assets skyrocketed from $259 million to over $2.5 billion by the end of 2017. However, this rapid growth was accompanied by allegations of authoritarian control, nepotism involving family-owned businesses, and a lack of transparency regarding school investments.
The administration faced scrutiny for specific financial maneuvers, including a 2016 real estate deal where Falwell transferred university sports facilities to his personal trainer without any capital investment from the trainer. To compensate for returning the site's lease until 2025, the institution consented to deduct $580,000 from the total cost. Additionally, reports surfaced that Falwell established companies in 2001 to facilitate property deals with Liberty-affiliated nonprofits.
Falwell's tenure ended abruptly in August 2020 following a social media photo and revelations of his wife’s affair with a pool attendant they had met in 2012. While Falwell initially claimed he was being blackmailed, reports suggested he had been aware of the relationship for years. He resigned on August 25, 2020, receiving a $10.5 million severance package despite the controversy.
The aftermath has been defined by litigation. Liberty University sued Falwell in April 2021 for $40 million, alleging breach of contract and violation of fiduciary duty. After several rounds of counter-suits regarding defamation and retirement funds, a settlement was reached in 2024, with the university ordered to pay Falwell $15.3 million.
