In short: In 1971, a massive earthquake left John Marshall High School's iconic Collegiate Gothic buildings condemned. While the cafeteria was lost, a grassroots campaign saved the historic main structure. Today, the school stands as a monument to both architectural preservation and the enduring pursuit of

Architect George M. Lindsey created the design. John Marshall High School commenced operations on 26 January 1931, featuring a Collegiate Gothic aesthetic. The institution bears the name of John Marshall, a man who held the position of fourth US Chief Justice for thirty years. This judicial heritage is reflected in the school's mascot, the "Barrister," and a bust of Marshall that stands in the center of the Senior Court.

The school's identity was forged during its first semester, when faculty and students cooperatively selected its motto, seal, and colors. They chose the motto "Veritas Vincit" (Truth Conquers...), a favorite sentiment of John Marshall. The school seal depicts an open Book of Learning with the scales of justice behind it. Its official colors—midnight and dawn blue—were chosen specifically because blue is symbolic of truth, harmonizing with the school's core motto.

The physical campus faced a crisis following the Sylmar earthquake of 1971, which led to several buildings being condemned. While the cafeteria was demolished, a community group called "Citizens to Save Marshall"—led by activists Joanne Gabrielson, Alberta Burke, Sherril Boller, and and Nina Mohi—campaigned to preserve the unique Main Building. After being closed for structural strengthening in 1975, the refurbished building finally reopened in September 1980. The school now serves approximately 2,000 students and houses diverse programs ranging from a School for Environmental Studies to a Social Justice Academy.

On 26 January 1931, the school launched with roughly 1,200 pupils and 48 instructors.

The Main Building underwent structural reinforcement from 1975 until its September 1980 reopening. Currently, the school accommodates about 2,000 pupils and 100 teachers on an FTE basis.
