In short: In 1914, the French army faced total collapse. Amidst retreating forces and intelligence errors, Joseph Joffre orchestrated a strategic pivot that halted the German advance, securing a decisive victory at the First Battle of the Marne and fundamentally altering the course of the Great War.

Joseph Joffre, a former military engineer, ascended to command the French forces on the Western Front during a period of profound instability. Despite having no prior experience commanding an army, he was appointed to lead the French forces in 1911 after a reorganization by Minister of War Adolphe Messimy. This restructuring had purged 'defensive-minded' officers, replacing them with a more aggressive leadership style based on Ferdinand Foch's Plan XVII.

The opening months of World War I were marked by significant intelligence failures. Joffre mistakenly believed the German center in the Ardennes was weak and that the French Fourth Army held local numerical superiority, even as reports of French defeats arrived. He also incorrectly believed the forts at Liège were still holding out as late as August 20, 1914. These misconceptions led to costly offensives in Alsace-Lorraine and the Ardennes, where French forces were beaten back by German counterattacks.

Despite these errors, Joffre's strategic maneuvering proved decisive. By late August, he began reorganizing his forces, including the formation of the Sixth Army under Michel-Joseph Maunoury. His ability to regroup retreating armies eventually culminated in the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. This victory halted the German advance and prevented a total French collapse. However, his political standing declined following unsuccessful offensives in 1915 and disappointing results during the 1916 battles of Verdun and the Somme.

Joffre's tenure ended in late 1916 when he was promoted to Marshal of France, becoming the first to hold this rank under the Third Republic. He moved into an advisory role before resigning, eventually leading a mission to the United States later in the war.
