In short: Designed to hunt tanks with a low profile and heavy armor, the Jagdpanzer IV was a specialized casemate-style vehicle. However, its powerful new gun made it so nose-heavy that crews gave it a humiliating nickname, struggling to navigate the very terrain it was meant to dominate.

Developed as a replacement for the Sturmgeschütz III, the Jagdpanzer IV was a casemate-style tank destroyer built on a modified Panzer IV Ausf. H chassis. Unlike previous Marder series vehicles, which were tall and featured open compartments, the Jagdpanzer IV featured a completely enclosed fighting compartment and a low silhouette. To achieve this, the traditional vertical front hull plate was replaced with sloped armor, providing 80 mm of protection—more effective than 100 mm of vertical plating.

The vehicle's design was not without controversy. Heinz Guderian, the inspector general of the Panzertruppen, initially objected to the project, viewing it as a needless diversion of resources from Panzer IV production. The design faced significant mechanical challenges; installing the heavy Pak 42 L/70 gun made the vehicle extremely nose-heavy. This imbalance hindered mobility in rough terrain, leading crews to nickname the vehicle "Guderian-Ente," or "Guderian's duck."

Production occurred in several distinct phases. The Pak 39 L/48 variant was produced between January 1944 and November 1944, with 769 to 784 units built. The more powerful Pak 42 L/70 variant, known as the Panzer IV/70, saw production from August 1944 until approximately April 1945, with 930 to 940 units manufactured. While highly successful as a dedicated tank hunter, the vehicle performed poorly when forced into roles as a general-purpose tank or infantry support vehicle during the desperate final stages of the war.
