In short: In the early 2000s, US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan faced a lethal new threat: improvised explosive devices. As standard Humvees proved vulnerable to these roadside bombs, a specialized, mine-resistant alternative became essential for convoy security and patrols in high-risk combat zones.

The M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV), nicknamed 'Guardian,' was developed in the late 1990s for the US Military Police Corps. While the military originally focused on distinct roles—frontline tanks for combat and unarmored utility vehicles for rear-area transport—the 1993 battle in Mogadishu highlighted the danger of using unarmored Humvees in contested zones. This shifted doctrine toward more robust protection.

The M1117 is built on a specialized V-shaped hull, a design engineered to deflect the force of explosions away from the crew. This makes it significantly more capable than the M1114 Humvee, which was not originally designed as a protected fighting vehicle. Unlike vertical-walled vehicles, the M1117's angled armor is specifically designed to withstand hits from small arms, mines, and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

Despite its effectiveness, the vehicle's history is marked by shifting priorities. A program to deploy the M1117 was canceled in 2002 due to budget concerns, as the vehicle's $800,000 price tag was significantly higher than the $140,000 M1114. However, the onset of the Iraq War in 2003 revitalized the program. Production surged from one vehicle every three weeks to 56 vehicles per month to meet urgent requirements.

The vehicle's versatility is evident in its variants. While the standard M1117 serves as a security vehicle, Textron has explored more aggressive configurations, such as the 90 mm Direct Fire Vehicle designed for the Afghan National Army. The M1117's influence persists via the Textron Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle (TAPV) currently employed by Canada's Army.
