In short: Designed as a high-speed bomber, the Ju 88 evolved into a jack-of-all-trades that served as a dive bomber, night fighter, and even a flying bomb. With over 15,000 units built, it became a cornerstone of the Luftwaffe, proving its adaptability across every major theater of the Second World War.

The Ju 88 began as a 1934 requirement for a multipurpose aircraft, eventually evolving into the Schnellbomber concept—a high-speed bomber intended to evade interception without defensive turrets. Chief designer Ernst Zindel led the development, with the first prototype flying on 21 December 1936. While early development was plagued by technical delays, the aircraft eventually entered service in September 1939. Its airframe was remarkably resilient, maintaining its basic structure throughout a production run that lasted until 1945.

The aircraft's versatility was its defining trait. Initially envisioned as a bomber, it was adapted into a heavy dive bomber, a role that proved so stressful it required significant airframe strengthening and the eventual adoption of shallower 45-degree dive angles by 1943. Beyond bombing, the Ju 88 excelled as a night fighter, particularly in the C and G series. These variants were equipped with sophisticated radar systems like the FuG 220 Lichtenstein SN-2 and often featured Schräge Musik—upward-firing cannons designed to strike Allied bombers from below.

The Ju 88's operational history was vast, spanning the invasion of Poland, the Battle of Britain, and the Eastern Front. It was also the subject of a significant intelligence coup in May 1943, when a Ju 88R-1 night fighter defected to Britain, allowing the Royal Air Force to study its advanced electronic equipment. Despite its success, the aircraft was not invincible; specialized ground-attack variants like the Ju 88P, armed with heavy 75 mm cannons, proved slow and vulnerable. Ultimately, the Ju 88 stands as the second-most produced bomber in history, surpassed only by the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator.
