A voluntary shield built from pre-World War II roots
In short: Latvia's National Guard is more than a modern reserve; it is a lineage of public self-defense. From its pre-WWII origins to its role in NATO, this organization bridges the gap between civilian life and national security, transforming volunteers into a high-readiness force for international operations.
Established on August 23, 1991, the Latvian National Guard (Latvijas Republikas Zemessardze) serves as a vital land component of the Latvian National Armed Forces. While it functions as a voluntary public military self-defense organization, its identity is deeply rooted in the pre-World War II Aizsargi organization. This historical continuity allows the Guard to maintain a unique role in the national defense system, facilitating public involvement in security while providing essential support for regular military operations.
The organization is structured into four brigades—formally known as regions or novadi—which are further divided into 18 battalions. Its capabilities have evolved significantly since the 1990s. Initially equipped with leftover Soviet weaponry such as AKM and AK-74 rifles, the Guard transitioned to Swedish-made Automatkarbin 4 rifles in the late 1990s. By the late 2010s, these were phased out in favor of H&K G36 rifles. The Guard also maintains a specialized aviation component, though its fleet of ex-Soviet light aircraft and gliders was integrated into the Air Force in 2000.
Today, the National Guard balances diverse responsibilities. It provides combat support and logistics for the regular Land Force, protects sites of national security importance, and assists the Latvian State Police with public law and order. It also manages crisis control and operates a high-readiness reserve for international deployment. To ensure future readiness, it manages the Youth Guard, the nation's largest youth movement, which recruits individuals aged 10 to 21 to foster a culture of service.
