In short: Geology can dictate destiny. Thousands of years ago, Mälaren was not a lake but a bay of the Baltic Sea. As the earth literally rose beneath it, the water receded, creating a strategic choke point that fundamentally reshaped Swedish history and commerce.

The transformation of Lake Mälaren is a masterclass in post-glacial rebound. Following the retreat of ice sheets roughly 11,000 years ago—which were up to 3 km thick—the land began to rise as the weight was removed. This uplift was initially rapid, moving at approximately 7.5 cm per year for about 2,000 years. While it has slowed significantly today (currently around 1 cm per year), the total cumulative uplift since deglaciation can reach up to 400 m.

This geological shift fundamentally altered the region's accessibility. During the Viking Age, Mälaren functioned as a bay of the Baltic Sea, allowing seagoing vessels to sail deep into the Swedish interior. However, by approximately 1200, the post-glacial rebound had made the mouth of Riddarfjärden bay and the Södertälje Canal so shallow that ships were forced to unload cargo near the entrances. This transition from a navigable bay to a landlocked lake effectively ended the dominance of older trade hubs like Birka.

The shrinking of these waterways created a geographical bottleneck at the choke point of Riddarfjärden. It was here that Stockholm was founded, seizing control of the remaining viable maritime route into the interior. The lake's strategic importance was so profound that by the mid-17th century, it became a priority for national mapping projects, culminating in King Charles XI’s 1687 commission of the 'Mälarkarta'—a massive, hand-drawn map designed to navigate this complex, island-heavy basin.
