In short: In Theosophy, a hidden group of enlightened beings governs Earth's evolution. At the heart of this cosmic hierarchy stands Maitreya, a figure destined to reappear and guide humanity. But the quest to identify this messianic leader led to profound schisms, a global movement, and a sudden, dramatic repudiation.

Theosophical cosmology describes a spiritual hierarchy of 'Masters of Ancient Wisdom'—beings who have mastered their physical and mental forms through previous incarnations. These entities, including the Buddha and the 'Lord of the Esoteric World' Sanat Kumara, act as guardians of Earth's evolutionary process. Maitreya, positioned as a Bodhisattva, holds responsibility for humanity's civilization, religion, and education.

The modern concept of Maitreya was shaped by key 19th-century figures. Alfred Percy Sinnett first introduced the figure in 1883, while Helena Blavatsky expanded the doctrine in her 1888 work, *The Secret Doctrine*. Blavatsky linked Maitreya to both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, suggesting that messianic figures appear at multiple intervals throughout human history.

By the early 20th century, leaders like Annie Besant and Charles Webster Leadbeater believed the next 'impulse' of the hierarchy was imminent. In 1909, Leadbeater identified Jiddu Krishnamurti as the potential 'vehicle' for the World Teacher. This led to the 1911 formation of the Order of the Star in the East. However, the project collapsed in 1929 when Krishnamurti publicly dissolved the Order and rejected the role, an event that caused significant upheaval and even led to the secession of Rudolf Steiner’s group.

While some later figures, such as Alice Bailey, continued to predict a Second Coming after 2025, the movement's influence shifted. The intense focus on a physical manifestation eventually gave way to more dispersed New Age interpretations, leaving the legacy of the 'World Teacher' project as a period of intense doctrinal struggle within Theosophy.
