Maitreya: The Future Buddha Who Will Arrive in Billions of Years
In short: Maitreya is the prophesied successor to Gautama Buddha, destined to appear in a distant golden age to restore the Dharma. While many have claimed to be him, traditional Buddhism maintains he currently resides in Tushita heaven, waiting for the right moment to descend to Earth in the far future.
Maitreya, whose name stems from the Sanskrit word for friendship, is recognized across all Buddhist schools as the fifth and final Buddha of the current eon. Unlike figures in some other traditions, Maitreya is not expected to arrive during our current era of decline. Instead, Buddhist prophecy places his advent billions of years in the future, specifically 5,670,000,000 years from now. He is expected to appear only after the teachings of Gautama Buddha have been forgotten and the world has undergone a cycle of moral and social restoration.
The myth of Maitreya is categorized by scholar Jan Nattier into four distinct types based on how devotees hope to encounter him. Some seek to meet him on Earth in their current lifetime, while others hope to be reborn in his future era. Many also focus on visionary encounters, attempting to reach his palace in Tushita heaven—his current abode—or aiming to be reborn there. This desire to train under a living Buddha is rooted in the belief that enlightenment is more attainable in the presence of a fully awakened teacher.
Artistic depictions of Maitreya have evolved significantly since the early centuries CE. In the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhara, he was often portrayed as a northern Indian nobleman, complete with flowing robes and a distinctive hair loop. This iconography, which includes the water bottle or kamaṇḍalu, has led some scholars to suggest connections to brahminical origins, though others argue these symbols represent wisdom and auspicious abundance. Regardless of the specific artistic style, Maitreya remains a central figure of hope, representing a future where humanity can once again enjoy an environment favorable to spiritual release.
While Maitreya is a future figure, his influence is present in various Mahayana sutras and traditions. He is credited with revealing scriptures that founded the Yogacara school and is viewed as a source of guidance for those who accumulate sufficient merit. His arrival is said to usher in a paradise-like state, where the world is free from the miseries of the current age, allowing beings to lead a holy life under his direct guidance.
