A spiritual hierarchy designed to dissolve the ego through ritual and yoga
In short: In 1907, Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones founded the A∴A∴, a magical order built on a rigorous, graded system of initiations. By blending Vedantic yoga, Theravada Buddhism, and ceremonial magic, the organization aims to guide individuals toward total spiritual perfection through a structured, scientific approach to mysticism.
The A∴A∴ operates through a strict hierarchy modeled after the Qabalistic Tree of Life. The system is divided into three distinct orders: the Golden Dawn (First Order), the Rosy Cross (Second Order), and the Silver Star (Third Order). These levels are connected by transitional stages known as the Dwellers on the Thresholds, specifically Dominus Liminis and the Babe of the Abyss.
For an aspirant, the journey is highly disciplined. It begins with a written examination and a ritual to become a Probationer. As members ascend, they must master specific skills, such as asana and pranayama for the Zelator grade, or intellectual mastery of Qabalah. A pivotal milestone is the grade of Adeptus Minor, where the practitioner seeks a profound, conscious connection with their Holy Guardian Angel—a central goal for any adept.
The most perilous stage involves crossing the Abyss, a spiritual void separating the phenomenal world from its source. To reach the grade of Magister Templi, an adept must face the Dweller in the Abyss, known as Choronzon. If successful, the individual's ego is destroyed, leaving them as a 'Babe of the Abyss' before they are reborn as a Master. This process aims to strip away all earthly attachments, allowing for a perfect understanding of the universe.
Unlike many fraternal societies, the A∴A∴ maintains a strict rule: members are never permitted to accept payment for initiations or spiritual services. Furthermore, the organization emphasizes individual work and a direct chain of instruction, where members only interact with those immediately above or below them in the hierarchy to avoid the political instability that collapsed their predecessor, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
