The manufactured identity of a New Jersey coastal enclave
In short: Nestled on the Barnegat Peninsula, Mantoloking is a place of extreme wealth and deep political consistency. Yet, its very name is a modern invention, crafted by a founder who sought to link the shoreline to a specific Native American heritage.
The name 'Mantoloking' first appeared in 1881, but it was not an ancient designation. It was a modern creation by Frederick W. Downer, one of the borough's founders. Downer chose this title to pay tribute to the Lenni Lenape's Manta sub-tribe, which also gave Mantua Township and Mantua Creek their names. This connection to the Manta sub-tribe is also reflected in the naming of nearby Mantua Creek.
While the name suggests deep roots, the borough's formal legal existence is relatively recent. Mantoloking was incorporated as a borough on April 10, 1911, through an act of the New Jersey Legislature, carved out from portions of Brick Township. Today, it remains a highly affluent community, having been ranked as the highest-income community in New Jersey as of the 2000 census, with a per capita money income of $114,017. The community is part of the Jersey Shore's 'Gold Coast' and features summer cottages designed by the renowned architect Stanford White. Despite its high property values, the town maintains a dry status where the sale of alcohol is prohibited by law.
The borough's identity is also defined by its political steadfastness. Within the state, this area represents a highly reliable Republican stronghold. Since the inaugural election won by New Jersey native Woodrow Wilson, no Democratic presidential candidate has won the borough. The margin of victory for Republicans has historically been massive; from 1932 to 2012, every Republican nominee won by at least 50 points, with several candidates, including Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon, securing 90% of the vote. This political trend has persisted even as the rest of New Jersey shifted toward Democrats. In the 2016 and 2020 elections, Donald Trump secured the borough by a margin exceeding 25 points.
