The decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden ended in a quiet, custom-built Pakistani mansion.
In short: For years, intelligence officials assumed the world's most wanted man was hiding in the rugged, ungoverned mountains along the Afghan border. Instead, he was living in a walled compound in the urban city of Abbottabad, just over a kilometer from a major military academy, hidden in plain sight.
Following his escape from the Battle of Tora Bora in December 2001, Osama bin Laden vanished into a decade of obscurity. While rumors of his death from illness or military strikes circulated frequently, he was actually moving through a series of safe houses across Pakistan. According to interrogations of his widows, he spent time in the Swat valley and Haripur before settling into a three-story mansion in Abbottabad in June 2005. This compound, built between 2003 and 2005, was surrounded by high concrete walls topped with barbed wire and lacked any telephone or internet service.
The breakthrough in the manhunt came from tracking a courier known as Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti. After detainees at Guantanamo Bay provided his pseudonym, American intelligence officials identified his real name and eventually located his residence in Abbottabad in 2009. By September 2010, the CIA concluded the compound was likely built to hide a high-value target. To confirm the occupants, the agency even attempted a fake vaccination program to extract DNA, though it remains unclear if they ever successfully obtained a sample to match against bin Laden's deceased sister.
On May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama authorized a raid on the compound. In a 40-minute operation, United States Navy SEALs killed bin Laden in the early hours of May 2. The team recovered computer hard drives and documents before extracting his body, which was later buried at sea. The discovery that bin Laden had lived for years in an urban area near a military academy sparked intense speculation and criticism regarding the knowledge of Pakistan's security establishment, though most officials had remained convinced until the very end that he was hiding in the remote tribal regions.
