In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, survival depends on a single locomotive
In short: After a devastating nuclear war, the survivors of the Moscow Metro must flee their tunnels. Guided by a locomotive called the Aurora, they embark on an intercontinental journey across Russia and Kazakhstan to find a world that might still be alive.
Set in 2035, Metro Exodus follows Artyom as he leaves the confines of the Moscow Metro. Following the events of Metro: Last Light, the protagonist and his allies—including the Spartan Order leader Miller—set off on the Aurora to escape the infighting and corruption of the underground. Their journey takes them through diverse, irradiated landscapes, from the Volga River to the dried-out Caspian Sea, and eventually to the shores of Lake Baikal.
The game's narrative is driven by a grim geopolitical reality: while many Russian cities were bombed, the war did not end. To prevent further attacks from NATO, the Russian leadership secretly jammed all communications, creating the illusion that humanity had gone extinct. Artyom's discovery of a signal jammer inadvertently breaks this silence, revealing that life persists beyond the tunnels.
Gameplay is defined by immersion and physicalized information. Rather than a traditional head-up display, players rely on tangible equipment. A wristwatch displays filter expiration timers, a compass can be attached to the wrist, and a flashlight flickers when the battery runs low. Survival requires constant scavenging for chemicals and materials to craft ammunition and gas filters, which only last one minute each in toxic environments.
The story's conclusion is determined by the player's moral choices throughout the journey. These decisions influence Artyom's fate and the ultimate destiny of the Spartan Order. While the journey is perilous—marked by encounters with mutated creatures, hostile factions like the Hansa soldiers, and even cannibalistic crews at Mount Yamantau—the ultimate goal is to find a radiation-free home where humanity can rebuild.
