The underground city built by the world's discarded people
In short: Deep beneath the surface lies Lux, a crumbling subterranean civilization powered by the mining of raffia. This rare mineral fuels advanced prosthetics and high-tech warfare, creating a society where human identity is literally woven into circuitry—and where history reveals a brutal truth about who was left behind.
In the fictional city of Lux, survival depends on 'texhnolyzation'—a process that allows humans to control complex prosthetic limbs. The protagonist, Ichise, undergoes this procedure after losing his arm and leg in a pit fight. His specific prosthetics are unique because they contain traces of his deceased mother's DNA woven into the circuitry, blending biological legacy with industrial technology.
The city is fractured by three primary factions: the Organo crime syndicate, which rules Lux; the revolutionary Salvation Union; and the nomadic Raccan youths who weaponize their own enhancements. This power struggle is further complicated by 'The Class,' an elitist group of inbred individuals led by a visionary named Kano. Kano seeks to forcibly evolve humanity through biomechanical soldiers called Shapes, intending to launch an assault on the surface world.
A pivotal revelation occurs when Ichise and the scientist Doc travel to the surface. They discover a desolate wasteland inhabited by 'theonormals'—humans preserved by technology but resigned to extinction. Historical records reveal that centuries ago, surface society deliberately exiled its undesirables underground to build Lux. This discovery of their status as outcasts leads to Doc’s suicide and underscores the series' exploration of social stratification.
The narrative concludes with a tragic cycle: after Kano is defeated and his vision for forced evolution fails, Lux collapses into ruins. Ichise dies in the darkness of the failing city, his prosthetics briefly projecting a final image of a flower—a fleeting connection to the seer Ran before the lights fade forever.
