The strategic port that shifted European capitals and survived tsunamis
In short: Nagapattinam was more than a coastal town; it was a geopolitical pivot point. From being a Chola naval gateway to the capital of Dutch Coromandel, its strategic value was so high that it sparked naval battles between the British and French, eventually becoming a primary target for colonial conquest.
The town’s prominence is rooted in the Medieval Chola period (9th–12th century CE), where it served as a vital port for commerce and east-bound naval expeditions. Its strategic importance was so significant that it was dubbed 'the city of Coromandel' by early writers and the Portuguese. During the reign of Kulottunga I, it was known as CholakulaVallipattinam, and it even hosted the Chudamani Vihara, a Buddhist monastery built by the Sailendra king of Srivijaya with patronage from the Chola ruler Rajaraja Chola I.
The transition to European dominance began in the 16th century. The Portuguese established a commercial center in 1554, but the Dutch eventually seized control. Ten villages moved from Portuguese to Dutch control following a 1662 treaty. By 1690, the Dutch officially moved their capital for the Coromandel Coast from Pulicat to Nagapattinam. This era was marked by intense maritime competition; the town was a focal point for naval warfare, including battles between British and French fleets in 1758 and 1782.
The British East India Company finally conquered the town in November 1781. Nagapattinam became a British territory in 1784 via a peace deal, serving as Tanjore district's main office between 1799 and 1845. While it eventually saw a decline as other ports like Tranquebar and Tuticorin rose, it remains a resilient coastal hub. It faced a modern catastrophe on December 26, 2004, when a massive undersea earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated the district, particularly impacting the fishing community and local infrastructure.
