In short: Before they were a staple of Marvel's roster, the New Warriors were a group of young heroes whose televised adventures led to a real-world catastrophe. Their journey from a junior Avengers team to the center of a tragic explosion changed the landscape of comic book history forever.

Created by editor Tom DeFalco, the New Warriors were designed as a junior counterpart to the Avengers, featuring a mix of established characters like Firestar, Marvel Boy, and Nova alongside the newly created Night Thrasher. The team's early narrative focused on the complexities of growing up as heroes, often dealing with personal crises such as Marvel Boy's legal troubles for negligent homicide or Night Thrasher's struggle with his corporate legacy and family secrets.

The team's trajectory shifted dramatically during the third volume of their series. While starring in their own reality TV show, the New Warriors were involved in a televised fight against super villains in Stamford, Connecticut. During this event, the villain Nitro exploded, killing 612 people, including several members of the team. This specific incident served as a primary spark for the massive 'Civil War' crossover event in 2006 and 2007, highlighting the consequences of publicizing superhuman conflict.

Beyond the tragedy, the team's history is defined by high-stakes cosmic and mystical threats. They have battled the second Sphinx, who manipulated reality to create a 'United States of Assyria,' and faced off against the herald Terrax. The group has undergone numerous restructurings, including a period where they traveled to the country of Zaire and a time-stream rescue mission where two separate groups of Warriors merged to defeat the Sphinx. Their evolution reflects the difficulty of balancing individual growth with collective responsibility.
