Marvel's secret society of heroes tried to govern the world from the shadows
In short: Formed in the aftermath of the Kree-Skrull War, the Illuminati was a clandestine group of Marvel's most powerful figures. They intended to act as a global governing body for superhumans, but their secret meetings ultimately fractured under the weight of conflicting ideologies, deep-seated mistrust, and the burden of impossible moral choices.
The Illuminati was established by Iron Man, who believed that if Earth's heroes had shared their intelligence, they could have prevented the devastating Kree-Skrull War. He proposed a representative body similar to the United Nations to manage superhuman affairs. The founding members included Iron Man, representing the Avengers; Mister Fantastic, for the Fantastic Four; Namor, for Atlantis; Black Bolt, for the Inhumans; Professor Xavier, for the X-Men; and Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme. Black Panther was invited but refused to participate, fearing the group's self-righteousness would lead to unethical actions.
The group's history is defined by a series of contentious decisions. They famously voted to exile the Hulk into space, a move that eventually led to his vengeful return to Earth. They also attempted to manage the Infinity Gems, with Mister Fantastic failing to will them out of existence before distributing them for safekeeping. Their secrecy often backfired; for instance, their failure to trust one another allowed a Skrull infiltrator to pose as Black Bolt, nearly destroying the group from within. These internal tensions were compounded by their differing perspectives, such as Xavier's concern that a formal organization would make mutants even more hated, and Namor's skepticism toward the group's violent, anti-establishment members.
As the Marvel Universe faced existential threats like Incursions, the Illuminati's methods grew increasingly extreme. They debated building world-destroying weapons and, in one instance, Namor destroyed an entire parallel Earth to prevent a collision. This moral erosion eventually led to the group's dissolution and the formation of the Cabal, a more villainous counterpart. By the time of the final Incursion and the events of Secret Wars, the original members were forced to confront the consequences of their secret governance, ultimately sacrificing their unity—and in some cases, their lives—to preserve the multiverse.
