In short: In the Ultraverse, being a superhero isn't just a calling; it's a liability. When super-powered 'Ultras' began becoming unruly, the public demanded regulation. The solution was Ultraforce: a government-backed team designed to keep their own kind in check, proving that even gods need a leash.

The Ultraforce debuted in August 1994 as a collection of established heroes, each with their own existing series. Unlike many superhero teams that form to fight external villains, Ultraforce was born from a necessity for internal regulation. Following a public outcry over the behavior of the undead Ghoul, the hero Hardcase argued that only other Ultras could effectively monitor their peers, rather than the government. This philosophy led to the team's formation, eventually backed by the U.S. government and President Bill Clinton.

The team's roster was diverse, featuring the super-strong Prime, the armored Prototype, and the warrior queen Topaz. Their history is marked by high-stakes cosmic and terrestrial conflicts, including battles against the fire-king Atalon, the Asgardian god Loki, and the alien menace known as the Progeny. A significant turning point occurred during the 'Black September' event, which saw the team restructured after Marvel Comics acquired Malibu Comics. This transition led to a reality-altering event where the hero Hardcase was erased from existence—only to later reappear in a state of limbo.

The narrative of Ultraforce explores the recurring theme of accountability. From fighting 'angels' created by the Metabio Corporation to investigating murders committed by the ultra Bonehammer, the team functioned as a specialized task force. Their legacy is defined by sacrifice, such as the death of the ultra Pixx to disable a nuclear arsenal, and the ultimate self-sacrifice of Hardcase to banish the monster Demonseed. It remains a complex study of how society manages extraordinary power through organized oversight.

While the fictional Ultraforce dominated the comic pages of the 1990s, the name has appeared in the real world as well. A UK-based entity, ULTRAFORCE GROUP LTD, was incorporated in June 2021 to provide human resources management but was dissolved in August 2024.
