In short: In the early 19th century, Newmarket was a vital hub of the New England shipping trade. But when the Civil War broke out, the town's industrial engine faced a sudden, critical supply chain crisis that threatened its entire economic foundation.

By the 1820s, Newmarket had transitioned from a colonial shipping center into a dominant industrial mill town. The Newmarket Manufacturing Company, incorporated in 1822, spearheaded this change by constructing its first cotton textile mill between 1823 and 1824. This company controlled the local waterfront and economy, utilizing seven different textile mills that harnessed the water power provided by the falls of the Lamprey River.

The town's economic strength relied on a complex global network. Before the mid-19th century, Newmarket served as a key node in the New England shipping trade with the West Indies, exporting timber, dried fish from the Squamscott River, and salted alumwives from the Lamprey River. In exchange, the town imported essential commodities like molasses, rum, and whale oil.

However, the outbreak of the American Civil War introduced a profound vulnerability to this system. Because the Newmarket Manufacturing Company relied on cotton shipped up from the Deep South, its production capabilities were adversely affected by the conflict. This disruption highlighted the precarious nature of an industrial economy built on geographically distant raw materials.

By erecting upstream dams to form Barrington's Mendums Pond and Nottingham's Pawtuckaway Pond, the firm controlled regional water levels. This allowed for a regulated flow of water into the Lamprey River during droughts to keep the works running. While the company's industrial era eventually ended with its closure in 1929, its architectural legacy remains preserved within the Newmarket Industrial and Commercial Historic District.
