In short: Long before it was a scenic destination, this corner of Vermont was a theater of geological violence. From colliding land masses and active volcanoes to a mile-thick sheet of ice, discover how ancient tectonic shifts and retreating glaciers forged a landscape of granite, lakes, and fertile soil.

The geology of the Northeast Kingdom is the result of immense prehistoric pressures. Approximately 466 million years ago, during the end of the Ordovician Period, two land masses collided. This event, known as the Taconic orogeny, created the Green Mountains and triggered volcanic activity. These eruptions produced the igneous rock and granite that characterize many of the region's mountains and the Connecticut River Valley today.

Roughly 400 million years ago, the Silurian–Devonian Period saw geological movements that laid down deposits of schist, limestone, and slate. The landscape was further transformed by the arrival of polar glaciers. For over a million years, a sheet of ice up to one mile thick covered the region, only retreating about 13,500 years ago. This glacial movement was responsible for carving prominent features like Lake Memphremagog, Lake Willoughby, and Crystal Lake, while leaving behind the boulders and sandy, clay-rich terraces that once supported local brick manufacturing.

The retreat of the Laurentide glacier also allowed for a period of saltwater intrusion. The Champlain Sea, an extension of the Atlantic Ocean, covered much of the area until roughly 11,000 years ago, at which point the waters became fresh. This cycle of inundation and recession paved the way for the arrival of early humans around 9300 BCE and the eventual establishment of the Abenakis people, who inhabited the region from 1000 BCE to 1600 CE.
