In short: In the late 1950s, engineers calculated that 35mm was the optimum caliber for an anti-aircraft gun. This calculation birthed the Oerlikon GDF, a system so effective it has been adopted by roughly 30 countries to defend against everything from cruise missiles to drones.

The Oerlikon GDF (originally designated 2 ZLA/353 ML) is a towed anti-aircraft gun that evolved from post-war 20mm designs. Developed in the late 1950s, it utilizes twin 35mm autocannons firing NATO-standard ammunition. While the GDF is a towed system, its 35mm KD series cannons have been integrated into various self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAG), including the German Gepard, the Japanese Type 87, and the Polish PZA Loara.

The system's evolution is marked by significant leaps in automation and fire control. Early models carried 112 rounds ready to fire, but the 1985 GDF-005 introduced an automated ammunition-handling system that increased capacity to 280 rounds and reduced the required crew from three people to just one. High-precision targeting was enabled by the Gunking 3D computer-controlled sight, which included a built-in laser range-finder on this version.

Modern variants, like the Turkish GDF-009 and the modernized GDF-003B, have transitioned to internal power sources and advanced 'airburst' ammunition. These rounds, such as the AHEAD and ATOM 35mm, are designed to explode at a pre-calculated point in front of a target, sending a cone of tungsten sub-projectiles to destroy modern threats like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and precision-guided weapons. This shift from direct-hit kinetics to programmable airburst technology represents the pinnacle of the system's development.

The GDF's versatility is further demonstrated by its integration with the Skyguard fire control system. This all-weather, low-to-medium altitude defense system can manage both 35mm guns and missiles, such as the AIM-7 Sparrow. It provides a comprehensive defense suite capable of surveillance, target acquisition, and calculation of derivative-action values, making it a cornerstone of modern point defense.
