In short: Born in 1975, Hendrik Wüst has spent his entire adult life within the machinery of the Christian Democratic Union. From co-founding a local youth chapter at fifteen to navigating high-stakes coalition negotiations and international diplomacy, Wüst has emerged as a central figure in German conservative politics and state governance.

Hendrik Wüst’s political trajectory began early in his hometown of Rhede, where he joined the local youth wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at age fifteen. By 1994, he held a seat on the city council, setting the stage for a career defined by rapid ascent within the party hierarchy. After qualifying as a lawyer in 2003, Wüst balanced parliamentary duties with roles in public affairs and industry advocacy, including leadership positions within business-focused wings of the CDU.

His career has not been without turbulence. In 2010, Wüst resigned as the state’s secretary general following revelations that the party had offered privileged access to then-Minister-President Jürgen Rüttgers in exchange for financial contributions. Despite this setback, he returned to prominence, eventually serving as State Minister for Transport before succeeding Armin Laschet as Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2021. His leadership was solidified in 2022 when his party secured the largest share of the vote in state elections.

Wüst is widely identified with the conservative faction of his party. In 2007, alongside figures like Markus Söder, he co-authored a manifesto on modern civic conservatism that was notably labeled as an act of defiance by the press. Beyond domestic policy, his role as Minister-President has involved significant international engagement, including diplomatic meetings with leaders such as the Dutch Prime Minister and the Emir of Qatar. While he was once considered a potential candidate for the federal chancellery, he ultimately threw his support behind Friedrich Merz for the 2025 federal election.
