The diminutive Soviet fighter that revolutionized aviation design
In short: In the mid-1930s, the Polikarpov I-16 introduced a new vogue in fighter design. Featuring a retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit, this small, stubby monoplane was the first of its kind to reach operational squadron status, fundamentally changing the landscape of aerial combat before the Second World War.
Designed by Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov, the I-16 (or TsKB-12 prototype) was a radical departure from the biplanes of the era. It utilized a mixed construction, combining a wooden monocoque fuselage with wings featuring a chrome-molybdenum steel alloy spar and dural ribs. While its design was cutting-edge, it was notoriously difficult to fly. The pilot's cockpit was located far to the rear, and the engine was positioned too close to the center of gravity, making the aircraft unstable and impossible to fly 'hands off.'
The aircraft's performance varied significantly depending on its engine. While the M-22 version reached 359 km/h, the more powerful M-25 version could reach 454 km/h at altitude. This speed made it the world's fastest production fighter at the time. However, the I-16 was also plagued by practical issues; pilots often flew with the canopy open because the glazing was poor or prone to slamming shut during maneuvers. In the Spanish Civil War, the aircraft was nicknamed 'Rata' (Rat) by Nationalists and 'Mosca' (Fly) by Republicans.
Despite its flaws, the I-16 was a significant technological milestone. It was the first aircraft to achieve operational squadron status with retractable landing gear and a fully enclosed cockpit. While modern literature sometimes incorrectly claims the aircraft had vicious spin behavior, flight trials by pilot Valery Chkalov in 1934 proved its stall behavior was actually benign and spins were easily terminated. Its legacy is defined by its role as the backbone of the Soviet Air Force during the early stages of World War II.
