In short: In the mid-1930s, the Tupolev SB was the world's most formidable bomber. Capable of outrunning most contemporary biplane fighters, this advanced Soviet monoplane shaped conflicts from the Spanish Civil War to the Second Sino-Japanese War, proving that in aviation, speed is the ultimate survival mechanism.

Developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau under A. A. Arkhangelski, the SB (Skorostnoy Bombardirovschik) was a revolutionary high-speed, twin-engined bomber. First flown in 1934, it was the Soviet Union's first mass-produced aircraft featuring a modern stressed skin. Its performance was so striking that it earned the nickname "Katyusha" in Spain and "Pterodactyl" among Soviet crews due to its high-aspect-ratio wing.

The aircraft's design was not without controversy. During testing, the ANT-402 prototype suffered from significant defects, leading test personnel to cover the plane with placards listing its faults. This triggered a Kremlin session where Joseph Stalin famously noted, "Aviation has no trivialities; every detail matters, and failing to fix any 'triviality' might cause an aircraft and its crew to perish."

The SB's supremacy depended upon velocity. In the Spanish Civil War, it outpaced the biplane fighters used by Nationalist forces. However, the arrival of faster fighters like the Messerschmitt Bf 109 rendered the SB obsolete by 1941. By that time, the SB was the backbone of the Soviet Air Force, accounting for 94 percent of its bombers.

Despite its obsolescence, the SB's impact was vast. It saw action in Spain, China, Mongolia, Finland, and against Germany in 1941. Production was massive, with a total of 6,945 units built across the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. It remained in various service roles, including training and even operations against opium plantations, until it was finally withdrawn from use in China in 1946.
