The Canadian car that became an American success story
In short: In the early 1980s, American Pontiac dealers faced a crisis: their full-size cars were gone. The solution wasn't a new design, but a Canadian import. By importing the Parisienne from Oshawa, Ontario, GM managed to satisfy a desperate demand for large, rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
The Pontiac Parisienne was a unique automotive hybrid designed specifically for the Canadian market. While American Pontiac models were built with unique chassis and drivetrains to distinguish them from Chevrolet, Canadian Pontiacs were nearly mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Impala or Caprice. This strategy allowed GM of Canada to offer a premium-feeling vehicle using economical Chevrolet engines and transmissions, such as the 230 and 250 cubic inch 6-cylinder engines or various V8s like the 350 and 454.
This distinction was driven by economic necessity. The Canadian market had a population roughly one-tenth the size of the U.S., with lower disposable incomes and higher gasoline prices. Maintaining unique, expensive American Pontiac parts and designs was often unprofitable due to import tariffs and the smaller scale of the market. Consequently, the Parisienne became the top-of-the-line model in Canadian Pontiac showrooms, offering luxurious upholstery and distinct chrome trim while hiding a Chevrolet heart.
The car's role shifted dramatically in the early 1980s. Following a 1977 downsizing of GM's full-size lineup, the U.S. Pontiac B-body line was discontinued in 1981. However, as the recession of 1979–82 lifted and demand for large cars returned, U.S. dealers requested a replacement. Since U.S. plants had already been converted to other uses, GM imported the Canadian-built Parisienne to the United States starting in 1983. These imports were essentially rebadged Chevrolets, utilizing Caprice or Impala components to satisfy American customers longing for a large, rear-wheel-drive Pontiac.
