In short: In the world of Supernatural, demons were once seen as purely black and white. The introduction of Ruby changed everything, forcing Sam and Dean Winchester to navigate a grey area where a demon could be a vital ally, a manipulative traitor, or something much more complicated.

Ruby was designed by series creator Eric Kripke to expand the characterization of demons, moving away from a simple 'good vs. evil' dichotomy. Initially appearing in the third season, she was portrayed by Katie Cassidy as a tough, mysterious figure who was 'always 10 steps ahead of everybody else.' By the fourth season, Genevieve Cortese took over the role, portraying a version of the character that was calmer and more driven by fear, aiming to add a sense of humanity to the demon.

The character's complexity stems from her shifting allegiances. While she assisted the Winchesters—even restoring power to the Colt—she was ultimately revealed to be a double agent working for the demon Lilith. Her ultimate goal was to trick Sam into freeing the god Lucifer by killing Lilith. Despite this betrayal, creator Kripke intended her final scene to depict her as the 'opposite of evil,' suggesting she believed her manipulations were for Sam's own good.

This narrative ambiguity was a deliberate choice by the writers to ensure Ruby was a character in her own right rather than a mere accessory to the protagonists. While her presence caused a fracture in the relationship between Sam and Dean, she also introduced the idea that demons could be useful tools in a war, even if they remained fundamentally untrustworthy.

The character's legacy is one of nuance. Whether she was a witch who sold her soul during the Plague or a manipulator using Sam's psychic powers, Ruby forced the audience to question the morality of the Winchesters' crusade and the true nature of the supernatural forces they fought.
