The 120mm smoothbore gun that redefined modern armored warfare
In short: Born from a Cold War arms race, Rheinmetall's Rh-120 became the global standard for tank lethality. From the German Leopard 2 to the American M1 Abrams, this precision engineering changed how nations defend their borders, evolving through decades of shifting technological threats.
The Rh-120's lineage traces back to 1965, driven by the need for a more powerful weapon than the 105mm guns used in earlier designs. As Soviet tank technology advanced—moving from the 115mm T-62 to the 125mm T-64 and T-72—Western engineers realized that existing calibres might struggle to penetrate new armor. This pressure led to the development of the L/44 smoothbore gun, which entered production in 1974. It was designed to provide the high muzzle velocity necessary to defeat evolving armored threats.
The gun's success led to widespread adoption. While the L/44 served as the backbone for the Leopard 2 and the American M1A1 Abrams (where it is known as the M256), the technology has continued to evolve. By 1990, the L/44 was deemed insufficient for future Soviet threats, prompting the creation of the L/55. This longer, 55-calibre version is 1.32 metres longer than the L/44, allowing it to generate significantly higher muzzle velocities while maintaining the same internal geometry and ammunition compatibility.
Today, the Rh-120 remains a cornerstone of armored combat. The L/55 has been retrofitted into various Leopard 2 models, including the German 2A6 and Spanish 2E. The evolution continues with the L/55 A1, which entered service in 2018 with increased pressure tolerances. As new threats like the Russian T-14 Armata emerge, Rheinmetall is already developing a 130mm successor, aiming for a 50% increase in kinetic energy to ensure the next generation of tanks remains dominant on the battlefield.
