The Oshkosh M-ATV: A high-mobility solution for Afghanistan's difficult terrain
In short: Designed to replace the Humvee, the M-ATV provides heavy MRAP protection without sacrificing off-road agility. Developed to navigate the poor roads of Afghanistan, this vehicle was selected by the U.S. military for its superior survivability and manufacturing capabilities, eventually seeing widespread deployment across multiple branches of service.
The M-ATV program emerged in the summer of 2008 as the U.S. Department of Defense sought a lighter, all-terrain capable Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. The goal was to address the specific challenges posed by the difficult terrain and poor road networks in Afghanistan. Following a competitive process involving over 20 companies, Oshkosh Corporation was awarded the contract on 30 June 2009. Brigadier General Michael Brogan of the U.S. Marine Corps noted that Oshkosh was chosen for its technical and manufacturing capabilities, as well as its superior survivability, despite its bid being only the second cheapest.
The vehicle features a V-shaped hull optimized for IED protection and a TAK-4 fully independent, coil-sprung suspension offering 16 inches of wheel travel. Specialised features boost its survivability: via run-flat inserts and a central tire inflation system, it can move for 30 miles at 30 mph despite two deflated tires. Additionally, the engine compartment is protected by the Stat-X fire suppression system, and the vehicle can continue driving for at least one kilometer even after taking a 7.62 mm round to the engine's vital systems.
The M-ATV has seen diverse applications and variants. While the base M1240 model features a manual turret, the M1277 variant utilizes the M153 CROWS remote-controlled weapon station. Specialized versions include the M1245 for SOCOM and the M1245A1. Beyond combat, Oshkosh unveiled the M1245 EXM medical variant, capable of transporting two litter-bound patients and two ambulatory patients alongside a medic, commander, and driver. The platform's versatility is further evidenced by its ability to be converted into an unmanned ground vehicle using the TerraMax system for route clearance and IED missions.
