In short: Designed to revolutionize modern warfare, the Piranha V entered the scene with high expectations. Yet, from cancelled contracts in 2008 to reports of radio interference and mechanical faults, the journey of this multi-role vehicle has been defined as much by its technical versatility as by its operational struggles.

The Piranha V, a fifth-generation variant developed by General Dynamics European Land Systems - Mowag GmbH, was born from the British Army's Future Rapid Effect System (FRES) program. While it was a provisional selection for the program in 2008, the contract was abruptly cancelled that same year. Despite this early setback, the vehicle's modularity allowed it to find success elsewhere. For instance, Denmark ordered 308 vehicles to replace the aging M113, with deliveries spanning from 2018 to 2023.

The vehicle's strength lies in its adaptability. It can be configured for various roles, including infantry, command, ambulance, and even mortar carriers. In Romania, a 900 million euro contract was signed in 2017 to produce 227 units, with some vehicles even being assembled locally by Uzina Mecanică București. Similarly, Spain's 'Dragón' program utilizes the Piranha V design to replace several older vehicle types, with a contract worth 1.74 billion euros awarded in 2020.

However, the platform has not been without controversy. Within the Danish armed forces, users have criticized the vehicle for issues such as brake problems, a lack of available mechanics, and even radio interference that could potentially discharge the machine gun. Furthermore, while the vehicle offers significant protection—including resistance to 10 kg landmines and 25mm rounds with add-on armor—the shifting landscape of modern conflict, particularly lessons from Ukraine, has led some nations to re-evaluate their requirements for protection and range.
