The versatile workhorses of modern littoral power projection
In short: How do you move an entire battalion of soldiers and 36 armored vehicles from the high seas to a beachhead? The San Giorgio-class amphibious transport dock serves as a mobile base, combining heavy-lift logistics with the ability to launch landing craft directly from its stern.
The San Giorgio-class represents a specific evolution in naval architecture designed for amphibious warfare. Built by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, these vessels serve the navies of Italy, Qatar, and Algeria. Their primary role is to act as a transport hub, capable of carrying a full battalion of troops and up to 36 armored vehicles. A key mechanical feature is the stern floodable dock, which allows the ship to accommodate three landing craft for beach operations.
The class has seen significant variations in design and utility. While the San Giorgio and San Marco were modified to include longer, full-length flight decks with four landing spots, the third vessel, San Giusto, retains its original construction. San Giusto is currently utilized primarily as a training ship. This highlights the modular nature of the class, where specific vessels can be tailored for different operational priorities, such as increased aviation capacity versus standard transport.
The future of this class involves a transition toward even larger platforms. The Italian Navy is currently planning to replace the two oldest vessels with new 16,500-ton amphibious assault ships. These upcoming vessels, slated for delivery between 2028 and 2030, will be designed to carry two LC-23 heavy landing craft specifically for battle tanks. This progression shows a move toward heavier lift capabilities and expanded hangar facilities to support larger personnel accommodations and more sophisticated helicopter operations.
Algeria's specific iteration, the BDSL (Bâtiment de Débarquement et de Soutien Logistique), demonstrates the class's adaptability. Launched in 2014, this improved version features a unique armament including an Aster 15 missile system and an OTO Melara 76 mm Super Rapid gun. It is designed to carry a landing force of 440 soldiers with a crew of 150, while its hangar can house 15 armored vehicles, showcasing how the platform can be customized for specific regional defense requirements.
