In short: Japan's Mogami-class frigates are redefining maritime presence by blending stealth fighter DNA with high-level automation. By integrating complex antenna arrays into a single streamlined mast, these vessels reduce their radar footprint while allowing a much smaller crew to manage complex combat environments.

The Mogami-class, also known as the 30DX, represents a significant shift in Japanese naval doctrine. Originally conceived as a way to replace older Asagiri-class destroyers and Abukuma-class destroyer escorts, the design focuses on multi-mission capabilities and extreme automation. This technological leap is heavily influenced by the stealth research conducted on the Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin (later the ATD-X) stealth fighter demonstrator. This lineage is evident in the ship's streamlined profile and its use of the NORA-50 'UNICORN' integrated mast, which consolidates various communication and radar antennas into a single radome-enclosed structure to minimize radar cross-section.

Automation is central to the Mogami's efficiency. The vessel utilizes an 'Advanced Integrated CIC' that features a 360-degree circular screen wall, using augmented reality to assist navigation and combat awareness. This centralized 'Total Ship Crew System' allows the ship to operate with only 90 personnel, a remarkably small crew for a vessel of its size. While the standard 30DX model has a displacement of 3,900 metric tons, the newer 'Upgraded Mogami' (or new FFM) is larger, with a standard displacement of 4,880 metric tons and an expanded 32-cell Mark 41 Vertical Launching System.

The class has also become a significant tool for Japanese defense diplomacy. The UNICORN antenna system has already been earmarked for export to India, following agreements to co-develop naval radio antennas. Furthermore, the Mogami design was recently selected for the Royal Australian Navy's general purpose frigate program. The Australian variant will be built partly in Western Australia and will feature specialized equipment like the Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile, marking a major milestone in regional maritime cooperation.
