The medical professional who turned skin extractions into a global media empire
In short: Sandra Lee, known to millions as Dr. Pimple Popper, transformed a niche dermatological procedure into a massive digital brand. By blending clinical expertise with high-production content, she navigated the complexities of medical ethics, platform monetization, and mainstream television stardom.
Sandra Siew Pin Lee-Rebish began her journey in the medical field after attending UCLA as an undergraduate, where she worked as a medical assistant. She eventually graduated from the Drexel University College of Medicine in 1998, followed by an internship in internal medicine at Allegheny General Hospital and a dermatology residency at Southern Illinois University. Her clinical foundation is reinforced by her status as a board-certified dermatologist and a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Mohs Surgery.
Lee's transition to a public figure began in 2010 on YouTube, but her significant growth occurred in 2015 after she observed the high engagement of her Instagram skin extraction videos. Her business model involves a specific exchange: she provides discounted or free treatments to patients in return for written permission to record and post their procedures. This content eventually led to a television deal with TLC in 2018, resulting in multiple seasons of her namesake show and a massive YouTube following exceeding 9.13 million subscribers by October 2026.
The path to stardom was not without friction. In late 2019, Lee faced criticism when she moved toward a subscription-based model for her content. She defended the move by explaining that YouTube had blocked advertisements on her videos due to their 'unsightly' nature, necessitating a new funding stream. Beyond media, she expanded her brand into retail with the launch of SLMD Skincare Products in 2017, selling everything from acne cleansers to specialized comedo extractors.
During the production of her TV show in November 2025, Lee had a stroke, which became public knowledge in April 2026. Despite this, her career remains a notable example of how modern medical professionals can leverage digital platforms to build multi-media brands encompassing education, entertainment, and retail.
