In short: In 930, a radical sect entered Mecca under a pledge of safety, only to turn on the pilgrims. They didn't just loot the city; they dismantled the Kaaba, stole its relics, and took the Black Stone, attempting to signal the literal end of the Islamic era.

The Sack of Mecca was orchestrated by the Qarmatians of Bahrayn, a radical Isma'ili sect. Led by the 16-year-old Abu Tahir al-Jannabi, the faction initiated multiple assaults on the Abbasid Caliphate, starting with a 17-day looting of Basra during 923. Abu Tahir believed by 928 that a Persian youth called Abu'l-Fadl al-Isfahani represented the 'mahdi'—a messiah destined to bring about the apocalypse and void current religious statutes. This messianic fervor drove the Qarmatians to strike at the heart of Islamic tradition.

On January 11, 930, the Qarmatians entered Mecca during the Hajj pilgrimage. After securing entry with a pledge of safety, they began a massacre that lasted eight to eleven days. They killed pilgrims, left bodies unburied, and ransacked the Kaaba, stripping it of all decorations and relics. Most notably, they dislodged and carried off the Black Stone to their capital in Bahrayn. This act was not merely a raid; it was a theological statement. Qarmatian doctrine viewed previous religions as 'veils' for a hidden truth; by desecrating the Kaaba, they sought to symbolize the destruction of the old era and the birth of a new messianic age.

The aftermath was a period of profound shock and failed diplomacy. While the Abbasids and Fatimids demanded the return of the Black Stone, Abu Tahir's regime eventually collapsed into internal chaos. The 'mahdi' al-Isfahani was revealed to be a fraud, incapable of miracles, and was eventually murdered. Following this failure, the Qarmatians denounced the episode as an error, restored Islamic law, and negotiated a peace treaty with the Abbasids in 939. The Black Stone was finally returned to Mecca in 951.
