How Scooter Braun transformed from a party planner into a global entertainment mogul
In short: Scooter Braun built a billion-dollar empire by scouting talent on YouTube and brokering massive corporate deals. From managing global superstars like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande to navigating high-stakes acquisitions and public feuds, his career reflects the evolving power dynamics of the modern music industry and venture capital.
Born in 1981, Scott Samuel Braun began his career organizing parties for the Anger Management Tour in 2002. His early success in marketing, including a $12 million campaign deal between Ludacris and Pontiac, paved the way for his transition into talent management. In 2008, he discovered 13-year-old Justin Bieber on YouTube, eventually securing a partnership with Usher to launch the singer's career. By 2007, he had established SB Projects, a multifaceted company that would eventually encompass management, music publishing, and record labels.
Braun's influence expanded significantly through strategic acquisitions and venture capital. His holding company, Ithaca Holdings, raised $120 million in 2010 and later acquired Big Machine Label Group in 2019. This purchase included the master recordings of Taylor Swift's first six albums, sparking a highly publicized dispute that lasted until 2025. Swift publicly denounced the transfer of her masters to Braun and announced plans to re-record her catalog to diminish the value of the originals. In 2020, Ithaca sold these recordings to Shamrock Holdings for a reported $405 million, netting Ithaca $265 million.
The scale of Braun's operations reached a new peak in 2021 when the South Korean company Hybe acquired Ithaca Holdings in a deal estimated at $1.05 billion. This transaction made Braun the CEO of Hybe America and a member of Hybe's board of directors. As part of the sale, he distributed $50 million in stock to longtime staff members. Braun retired from artist management in 2024 to focus on his executive roles, eventually transitioning to a board member and senior advisor position at Hybe in 2025. Beyond music, he has been an early investor in companies like Uber, Spotify, and Waze, with his net worth surpassing $1 billion in 2021.
