From metal band vocalist to the mayor of Davao City
In short: Sebastian Duterte's political rise is a study in dynastic succession and public spectacle. From his early years as a metal singer to becoming the 22nd mayor of Davao City, his path has been defined by family ties, high-stakes legal battles, and controversial leadership during national crises.
Sebastian 'Baste' Duterte entered politics in 2019 after initially expressing no interest in public life. His trajectory was accelerated by the political ambitions of his siblings; he served as vice mayor from 2019 to 2022 and later won a landslide victory for mayor in 2022, substituting for his sister Sara Duterte when she ran for vice president.
His tenure has been marked by significant infrastructure investment and controversy. While his administration attracted over ₱1 billion in investments in 2023 and initiated projects like the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project, he faced sharp criticism for failing to curb deadly floods despite a ₱51 billion fund for the city's first district—the largest such allocation in the country. Furthermore, he has been criticized for absenteeism during crises, notably being spotted in Ibiza while his city faced flooding in July 2026.
The Duterte family dynamics are central to his political identity. Following his father Rodrigo’s arrest at The Hague in March 2025, Sebastian served as acting mayor until officially assuming the post on January 23, 2026. His leadership also involves navigating complex legal and personal scrutiny, including a confession regarding P35.878 million in contracts involving GenCorp Industries Inc., which was linked to his sister's assets during her impeachment trial.
Beyond governance, Duterte’s public persona includes hosting the 'Basta Dabawenyo' podcast and a reality travel show. His personal life has also been subject to public scrutiny, including past family friction with his father and various reports regarding his private relationships and lifestyle.
