In short: From a peaceful independence movement to a powerful separatist force, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) reshaped Yemen's landscape before its sudden collapse. Its brief journey illustrates how sub-state political settlements can complicate national peace processes, moving from local grievances to high-stakes regional power plays.

The roots of the conflict lie in the 2011 Arab Spring and the subsequent rule of Ali Abdullah Saleh, who governed unified Yemen since its creation. Following Saleh's departure in 2012, the Southern Movement emerged as a peaceful independence group. It gained significant political weight after the 2015 Saudi-led intervention when it aligned with the Hadi government against Houthi rebels. However, tensions with the central government peaked in April 2017 when President Hadi sacked Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, the Governor of Aden, for his loyalty to the Southern Movement.

In May 2017, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) was formally established, initially comprising governors from several regions including Dhale, Shabwah, and Socotra. Despite being part of the internationally recognized government's framework, the STC maintained a distinct separatist agenda. By 2022, the STC was integrated into the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC). Yet, internal friction persisted; the STC was notably supported by the United Arab Emirates, even while the UAE remained a member of the broader Saudi-led coalition supporting the Yemeni government.

The conflict escalated sharply in late 2025. The STC launched a major offensive, seizing towns in Wadi Hadramaut and claiming nearly 52% of Yemen's territory, including almost all of former South Yemen. This prompted a Saudi counter-offensive and a UAE announcement of voluntary withdrawal from Yemen following Saudi strikes on a port city. The STC's rapid expansion forced a swift conclusion: on January 9, 2026, the STC dissolved, and its leader, Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, fled the country, ending the specific sub-conflict.
