How a diorama art style reimagined a handheld classic
In short: When Grezzo remade the 1993 Game Boy classic for the Nintendo Switch, they avoided a simple port. Instead, they embraced a 'retro-modern' aesthetic, using tilt-shift visuals and toy-like designs to evoke the feeling of a miniature world, transforming a 2D handheld experience into a vibrant 3D landscape.
The 2019 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening departs significantly from the series' typical visual language. Moving away from the A Link to the Past-inspired style or the Wind Waker-inspired designs seen in Four Swords Adventures, the remake utilizes a 'retro-modern' approach. This includes toy-like character designs and a diorama-like world. To achieve this, series producer Eiji Aonuma employed a tilt-shift effect, which exaggerates the camera's depth of field and perspective to mimic the appearance of the original game's world on the Game Boy's 66 millimeter screen.
The gameplay mechanics were also modernized while maintaining faithfulness to the 1993 original. While the game retains the traditional top-down perspective, it introduces unique elements like the ability to jump over obstacles and side-scrolling platforming sections. A notable addition is the 'Chamber Dungeons' system. Conceived after Shigeru Miyamoto inquired about implementing Super Mario Maker-style gameplay, this feature allows players to rearrange rooms from completed dungeons to create new challenges, rather than building them from scratch.
The remake has proven commercially successful, selling over 6.46 million copies worldwide as of December 2022. While it received generally positive reviews—with OpenCritic noting a 95% recommendation rate—some technical issues were noted, such as occasional slowdown. Despite this, it remains one of the best-selling titles on the Nintendo Switch, having launched as the fastest-selling Switch game of 2019.
