The fallen soldier who sought to become a god through cosmic destruction
In short: Born from an experiment involving extraterrestrial cells, Sephiroth transformed from a heroic SOLDIER operative into a vengeful antagonist. Driven by the discovery of his alien heritage, he aims to harness the planet's life force to annihilate all life, ultimately ascending to a new level of existence.
Sephiroth, the primary antagonist of the 1997 role-playing game Final Fantasy VII, was designed by Tetsuya Nomura as a foil to the protagonist, Cloud Strife. While Cloud works to reaffirm his self-worth, Sephiroth rejects his identity to fulfill a perceived destiny. This rivalry was inspired by the legendary animosity between the swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojirō.
His superhuman physiology stems from an experiment conducted by the Shinra megacorporation, which injected him with cells from the extraterrestrial lifeform Jenova while he was still a fetus. This revelation triggered a descent into rage and vengeance. Rather than viewing himself as evil, Sephiroth sees himself as a chosen man tasked with reaching the 'Promised Land' by changing the world through chaos.
The character's design and presence have evolved significantly through the series. In the film Advent Children, his strength was described as having ascended to a new level of existence, characterized by a monotone, calm voice and a lack of blinking or breathing to emphasize his other-worldliness. His iconic single black wing, seen in his 'Safer Sephiroth' form, serves as a visual reference to his famous theme, 'One Winged Angel.'
Musically, Sephiroth is defined by the work of Nobuo Uematsu. The track 'One Winged Angel' is a complex fusion of the styles of Igor Stravinsky and Jimi Hendrix, composed by Uematsu as a musical puzzle. The character's name itself draws from the Kabbalah, referencing the ten sephirot on the Tree of Life through which God reveals himself.
