The Ruin: How a Power Vacuum Fractured Ukraine for Three Decades of Civil War
In short: Following the death of Bohdan Khmelnytsky in 1657, Ukraine descended into a chaotic era known as The Ruin. Lacking clear succession and torn between competing foreign powers, the nascent Cossack state fractured into rival factions, leading to decades of civil war, foreign intervention, and mass depopulation across the region.
The Ruin, a term coined by chronicler Samiilo Velychko, describes the tumultuous period between 1657 and 1687. After the death of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, who had led a massive uprising against Polish-Lithuanian rule, the Cossack state faced a crisis of leadership. Khmelnytsky’s son, Yurii, was young and lacked his father's authority, leaving the state vulnerable. Without natural borders or a tradition of statehood, the Cossack society—comprising nobles, elite officers, and armed peasants—became a battleground for regional powers, including the Tsardom of Moscow, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Ottoman Empire.
The era was defined by shifting alliances and internal strife. Leaders frequently switched allegiances to survive, often pitting the poorer Cossacks against the wealthier starshina, or elite officers. This instability was exacerbated by foreign treaties, such as the 1667 Treaty of Andrusovo, which partitioned the Cossack lands along the Dnieper River without consulting the Cossacks themselves. While the Left Bank fell under Russian influence, the Right Bank suffered through Polish restoration and Ottoman-backed incursions, leading to severe depopulation as residents fled the violence.
Attempts to reunify the state, most notably by Petro Doroshenko, ultimately failed, resulting in further devastation. By the time Ivan Mazepa ascended as hetman in 1687, the period of The Ruin had effectively concluded, but the political landscape had been permanently altered. The Eternal Peace Treaty of 1686 solidified the division of Ukrainian lands between Russia and Poland, ending the dream of a unified, sovereign Cossack state and integrating the Left Bank into the Russian sphere.
