The Navy's oldest active warship is a floating command center
In short: While modern warships focus on heavy weaponry, the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) is built for a different kind of power: information. As the oldest deployed warship in the U.S. Navy, it serves as a sophisticated nerve center, designed from the keel up to coordinate massive amphibious forces.
Commissioned in November 1970, the Blue Ridge was a radical departure from traditional naval design. Rather than prioritizing heavy armament, it was engineered as a dedicated Amphibious Command and Control (LCC) ship. At its launch, it boasted the world's most sophisticated electronics suite, which was reportedly 30 percent larger than that of the USS John F. Kennedy, the most complex aircraft carrier of its time. Its 'main battery' consisted of computers, communications gear, and surveillance systems, featuring an automated patch panel that allowed the crew to mix and match any combination of communication equipment.
The ship's physical design even reflects its electronic mission; the topside area was kept intentionally clean to minimize interference with its own sensitive communications. Over the decades, its hardware has evolved from high-frequency radio systems, characterized by long wire antennas, to modern satellite communications. Despite its age, it remains forward-deployed in Yokosuka, Japan, serving as the flagship of the Seventh Fleet. It is expected to remain in active service until 2039.
The Blue Ridge has a storied operational history, most notably during the Vietnam War. In 1972, it served as the command ship for the Easter Counter-Offensive, the largest concentration of wartime amphibious force since the Korean War. During this period, it spent 64 days at sea, coordinating the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade. It also played a role in Operation Venture Road and provided a platform for intelligence gathering and high-level diplomatic meetings, including a visit from the president of South Vietnam.
