In short: Founded in 1693 as a humble hot chocolate shop, White's evolved into the most exclusive gentlemen's club in London. Beyond its doors, the establishment became a notorious hub for gambling and political maneuvering, where the era's most influential men placed eccentric bets on everything from marriage prospects to war.

Established by Italian immigrant Francesco Bianco in Mayfair, White's began as a chocolate emporium before transitioning into a private members' club. By the early 18th century, it had earned a reputation as a gambling house, with members famously dubbed the gamesters of White's. The club's influence was so profound that Jonathan Swift once labeled it the bane of half the English nobility. In 1778, the institution relocated to its current premises on St James's Street, a Grade I listed building that would later feature a distinctive bow window.

The bow window became a seat of immense social power. The table positioned directly in front of it was reserved for the club's most influential figures, including the arbiter elegantiarum Beau Brummell and later the 1st Duke of Wellington. It was here that William Arden, 2nd Baron Alvanley, reportedly wagered £3,000 on a race between two raindrops sliding down the glass. Such eccentricities were common in the club's famous betting book, which documented wagers on sports, social life, and the volatile political developments of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.

Throughout the 19th century, White's served as an unofficial headquarters for the Tory party, standing in contrast to the nearby Whig-aligned club, Brooks's. While the club has maintained its single-sex policy despite modern protests, its history remains deeply intertwined with the British establishment. From hosting the stag night of King Charles III to counting members of the royal family among its ranks, White's continues to operate as a bastion of tradition, preserving a legacy of exclusivity that has persisted for over three centuries.
