In short: Win Myint’s path to the presidency of Myanmar was marked by imprisonment and political maneuvering. A geologist turned senior lawyer, he navigated decades of military rule to become a key ally of Aung San Suu Kyi before facing his own long-term incarceration following the 2021 coup.

Win Myint’s political identity is rooted in legal expertise and grassroots activism. After graduating with a geology degree from Rangoon Arts and Science University, he became a High Court senior lawyer in 1981. His early involvement in the 8888 Uprising led to his first period of imprisonment. Despite being jailed, he managed to run in the 1990 Myanmar general election, winning a majority of 20,388 votes (56%) for Danubyu Township—a seat he was never permitted to take.

Following his return to politics via by-elections during 2012, he held the position of House of Representatives Speaker between 2016 and 2018. His transition to the presidency was a calculated move; he resigned as Speaker on March 21, 2018, to pave the way for his nomination. On March 28, 2018, he was elected the 10th President of Myanmar by the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, receiving 403 out of 636 votes.

His presidency was short-lived. Following the February 1, 2021 coup d'état, Win Myint was detained in Naypyidaw. During his subsequent trial for COVID-19 gathering violations, he revealed a critical detail: two senior military generals had attempted to force his resignation under the pretext of "ill health" just before the coup. He served four years in prison until being pardoned by Min Aung Hlaing on April 17, 2026.

Win Myint remains a complex figure of contested legitimacy. While the opposition National Unity Government (NUG) has continuously designated him as president, he has never voiced support for their unilateral naming of him while in prison, and his stance remains unclear following his release.
