The shifting identities of the Wonder Girl mantle
In short: In the world of DC Comics, the title of Wonder Girl is far from static. It has represented a teenage Diana Prince, a rescued orphan named Donna Troy, and even a team of young heroines. Across decades of retcons and multiversal shifts, the mantle has undergone radical transformations.
The Wonder Girl alias first appeared in April 1959 as a teenage version of Wonder Woman. Initially, the character's origin was tied to Diana's childhood, but the narrative shifted significantly over the years. In one Silver Age continuity, Diana was born before the Amazons settled on Paradise Island, rather than being created from clay. However, by 1966, writers restored the traditional clay-based origin.
As the character evolved, the mantle became independent from Diana. In June 1965, Donna Troy debuted, eventually becoming a founding member of the Teen Titans. Her origins have been famously unstable; she has been depicted as a rescued orphan, a 'Titan Seed' raised on New Cronus, and even a mystical twin created by the sorceress Magala. In the New 52 continuity, she was reimagined as being created from clay specifically to destroy Wonder Woman.
The mantle has continued to expand through different characters and settings. Cassie Sandsmark, the granddaughter of Zeus, joined the Teen Titans and Young Justice, gaining powers from Zeus and later Ares. More recently, in January 2021, Yara Flor debuted as the most recent Wonder Girl. A daughter of an Amazon and a Brazilian river god, Yara possesses unique abilities like hydrokinesis and rides a winged horse named Jerry.
The complexity of these identities is further highlighted by alternative universes. Within the DC Comics Bombshells setting, Wonder Girl represents a group of young Asian-American youths, such as Cassie Sandsmark and Donna Troy, who gain power through magical objects.
