How a four-issue miniseries evolved into a decades-long comic book mythology
In short: What began as a brief, four-issue experiment at Marvel Comics transformed into an expansive saga. Spanning hundreds of issues across the US and UK, this mechanical epic survived writer changes and editorial shifts to define a generation of science fiction storytelling.
The Transformers comic book saga, published by Marvel Comics, was never intended to be a sprawling epic. Originally, the American series was scheduled to be a mere four-issue miniseries. However, the narrative grew far beyond its initial constraints, eventually reaching 80 issues in the US run and establishing a complex mythology that would influence various subsequent iterations of the franchise.
The creative direction of the series saw significant shifts during its publication. After the writer Budiansky grew tired of the title, Marvel US brought in Simon Furman, who was already an established writer for the Transformers Marvel UK title. Furman took over the reins starting with issue #5 6, bringing a new era to the US publication.
The franchise's reach extended significantly through its international presence. A sister title, Transformers Marvel UK, was launched to complement the US run. This publication spliced original stories into the existing continuity and maintained a much longer run, lasting from September 1984 to July 1991 across 332 issues.
Decades after the original run, efforts were made to continue the established Marvel continuity. In July 2011, IDW Publishing announced a project titled The Transformers: Regeneration One. This continuation, which ran from July 2012 to March 2014, featured the return of key creators including Simon Furman, Andrew Wildman, and inker Stephen Baskerville. The series was designed to bridge the gap by covering issues #81 through #100.
