The Faltine princess who traded her cosmic divinity for a mortal prison

In short: She was once a being of pure, immortal energy. But after a brief, transformative encounter with a disciple of her brother, the cosmic entity Umar became trapped in a human form—forever altering her power and her place in the multiverse.

Born as a Faltine, a race of immortal, pure-energy beings, Umar and her brother Dormammu were originally banished from their home universe after murdering a fellow Faltine. While they eventually conquered the Dark Dimension, the struggle to hold the realm weakened Umar, forcing her into a humanoid shape. This physical limitation was cemented following a tryst with Orini, a disciple of her brother. The resulting birth of her daughter, Clea, after six cycles in the Dark Dimension, rendered Umar unable to ever return to her original, higher-dimensional form.

This loss of divinity fueled a lifelong cycle of betrayal and cosmic warfare. Umar is characterized by a 'malevolent intelligence' and a penchant for guile, often using her daughter as a hostage to manipulate Doctor Strange. Her history is one of shifting allegiances; she has worked alongside Dormammu to conquer realms, only to later steal his power and trap him as a powerless mutate. Her power remains immense, often exceeding the capabilities of Earth's sorcerers, yet she remains a figure of profound instability.

The character's history is also marked by controversial narrative choices. In the 2005 miniseries *Defenders: Indefensible*, a magical encounter between Umar and the Hulk drew significant criticism from reviewers like Rob Bricken, who described the non-consensual nature of the act as rape. Despite these complexities, she remains a cornerstone of Marvel's mystical lore, serving as a primary antagonist whose personal vendettas often drive the fate of the Dark Dimension.
