From the baseball diamond to the front lines of war
In short: Before he was a household name in broadcast journalism, Adam Housley was a professional athlete. His transition from the minor leagues to reporting on global catastrophes reveals a unique trajectory of high-stakes performance, moving from the physical demands of the pitcher's mound to the intense pressure of international news.
Housley's professional foundation was built in sports. A graduate of Pepperdine University, he was a standout pitcher and hitter, earning status as a Junior Olympic All-American. He played on a National Champion College World Series team in 1992 and spent two years in the Cape Cod Baseball League. His professional aspirations led him to be drafted by the Montreal Expos, eventually playing in the minor league systems for both the Milwaukee Brewers and the Detroit Tigers, where he appeared in 97 games.
He pivoted to journalism in the late 1990s, starting in his native Napa before moving to various California stations. His reporting quickly escalated to global crises. He was on the ground in Kuwait during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, reporting from the deck of the USS Milius, and provided some of the first Western coverage of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. His work often placed him in extreme environments, from the Fukushima nuclear site to the aftermath of the San Bernardino attack.
In 2018, Housley left Fox News, citing a desire to prioritize hard-news reporting over political commentary. He has since diversified his portfolio into the agricultural sector. Building on a family legacy in grape growing that dates back to 1969, he helped establish the Century Oak winery in 2000. He also expanded into the beverage industry by opening a coffeehouse in Napa in 2021, blending his media experience with his family's roots in the land.
