The Rise and Fall of the Uzbek President's Daughter and Alleged Robber Baron
Gulnara Karimova once wielded immense influence as a businesswoman, diplomat, and pop star under the stage name Googoosha. Yet, the daughter of Uzbekistan's former president eventually faced international investigations, massive asset seizures, and lengthy prison sentences, marking one of the most significant corruption cases in modern history.
Gulnara Karimova, born in 1972, was the eldest daughter of Islam Karimov, who served as president of Uzbekistan from 1991 until his death in 2016. During her father's tenure, Karimova built a multifaceted public profile, holding diplomatic posts at the United Nations and in Moscow, while simultaneously pursuing careers in fashion, music, and media. She founded various non-governmental organizations and was even described by Swiss magazine Bilanz in 2009 as one of the country's ten richest women.
However, behind this public persona, US diplomats characterized her as a robber baron who bullied her way into lucrative business sectors. Investigations by the US Department of Justice and other international bodies alleged that she orchestrated a vast criminal network, extracting over $1 billion in bribes from telecommunications firms. By 2016, the US had seized $850 million in assets linked to her corrupt dealings. Prosecutors have described the scope of her alleged activities—spanning 12 countries and involving properties in London, Dubai, and Switzerland—as one of the largest bribery cases ever recorded.
Her influence began to wane in 2013 following a conflict with her father. By 2014, she was placed under house arrest, and in 2017, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraud and money laundering. Her legal troubles continued to mount; in 2020, she received an additional 13-year sentence for extortion and other crimes. While she has consistently denied any wrongdoing, her case remains a stark example of the intersection between political power and private wealth accumulation, culminating in a dramatic fall from grace that eventually led to the abandonment of a Swiss corruption trial in 2026 due to her inability to participate.
